Chapter Eight

Lane had cried a few civilized tears when Theo left for his summit in Switzerland. Vampires were allowed that. But they weren’t allowed to stay in their rooms for days on end, looking at moon charts and fretting while their faces turned into murder scenes.

He cried so much that he had to keep a blood bag in the mini fridge near the foot of his bed to replenish the lost blood. Erica and Sam wouldn’t leave him alone. Each of them visited him at least once per night trying to get him to come down to the great room and have a human, to socialize.

He couldn’t do that. He didn’t want to move an inch—unless it would bring him closer to Parker. And he knew for a fact that Parker was not in the great room; he wouldn’t even answer Lane’s texts.

A few nights after Parker had broken things off, Heather came by with Lane’s duffel bag. Lane left his room long enough to meet her outside, since she still wasn’t allowed inside the den. Her features were hard, her gaze fiery. Lane knew before she spoke that she’d taken Parker’s side.

She dropped his duffel on the grass by the wrought iron gate set in the fence that surrounded the property.

“Thanks,” he said.

“How are you doing?”

An alien smile stretched Lane’s lips. “Do you care?”

“Of course I do!” Heather thumped the outside of Lane’s arm with the back of her hand. “How can you say that? I care about both of you. And I’m mad at both of you.”

“Tell him to text me back.”

“Did you apologize to him?”

Lane had to laugh at that. He looked down at the sneakers he hadn’t bothered to tie. “I literally begged him. On my knees. It was pretty undignified.” He laughed again, because if he didn’t laugh, he was going to come apart right here. “He doesn’t want me.”

“That’s not true. He wants you very much; he’s just being stubborn. And he’s never wanted to mate with somebody so bad before. That’s what he said.”

Lane tried to tune the words out. None of that helped him. “He doesn’t want to be with me. Is that better?”

Heather crossed her arms, the faux leather of her jacket squeaking. “You want my advice?”

“Why not?”

“His rut’s coming up. You know, mating season?”

Lane knew what it meant in theory, anyway. “Yeah, yeah.”

“Could be in a few days or a few months. But if you really want to be with him, you should make yourself available for it. It would mean a lot to him.”

Lane had offered himself up several times over the last few nights, only to be greeted by silence. But he hadn’t tried this tactic. Would he be willing to put himself at the mercy of Parker’s wolf? Let him bite and claw and fuck for… Well he didn’t know how long it would last. But it didn’t matter. Despite the fear that clogged his throat, the answer to all that was yes.

It wasn’t as if Parker would say yes.
